Saving Hong Kong's Logistics Sector: Cutting Cross-Border Trucking Costs

Dr. Saimond Ip
CEO, OnePort Limited

Transportation & Logistics Committee

The famous US$200 trucking cost differential between Shenzhen and Hong Kong ports is driving more and more cargo to Shenzhen; threatening the long-term survival of the Hong Kong logistics sector. Despite joint industry and government efforts, the cross-border trucking cost has not come down substantially.

Dr. Ip will examine recent initiatives to rejuvenate this effort and build up economies of scale for more cost-effective cross-border trucking, and will evaluate their chances of reversing the problem.

OnePort provides value-added information and related services to strengthen the competitive position of Hong Kong as a logistics hub to 20,000 companies, including shipping lines, freight forwarders, shippers, truckers, and barge operators. Its primary focus is to improve the efficiency of container movement through the port of Hong Kong . One project underway is to develop more cost-effective cross-border trucking modes. OnePort was founded by Hongkong International Terminals Ltd, Modern Terminals Ltd. and COSCO-HIT Terminals (Hong Kong) Ltd.

Prior to joining OnePort in 2004, Dr. Ip founded and led several ventures, including a software publisher, a mobile location developer, a trading firm, and a multi-media publishing company. He also spent six years with McKinsey & Co.'s greater China practice. He earned a Ph.D. in Management Systems from Cambridge University.
