A total of 2,700 toys collected by the American Chamber of Commerce were today distributed to children under the care of two charities as part of its annual Holiday Toy Drive.
Over 30 children at the Hong Chi Winifred Mary Cheung Morninghope School were particularly thrilled this morning when a special Disney friend made a surprise appearance with toys for them at a holiday celebration jointly organized by AmCham and The Walt Disney Company (Asia Pacific) Limited.
Carrying the toys in his big red velvet bag, Santa Mickey arrived with a group of Disney VoluntEARS.
The school belongs to Hong Chi Association, the largest non-profit organization dedicated to serving people with mental handicap of all ages and all grades of mental handicap as well as their families.
Five volunteers from AmCham and ten Disney VoluntEARS participated in group games with the kids, and took photos of them together with their families and Santa Mickey.
AmCham volunteer Jon Zinke, who chairs the AmCham Charitable Foundation, said, “It is really nice to be able to meet with these children and make the holiday season a bit more special for them."
“This is the second year running that staff at TWDC chose to support the Toy Drive program. It is very heartwarming to help bring some Christmas cheer to those who need it," said Stanley Cheung, Managing Director, The Walt Disney Company (Hong Kong and China) Limited.
Most toys have been donated by six companies in response to the appeal for donation of unused and safe toys by AmCham’s Corporate Responsibility (CRC) and Young Professionals (YPC) Committees. They include Li & Fung (Trading) Ltd., Hasbro Far East Ltd., Fast Pace Far East Ltd., Warner Bros. Consumer Products Cartoon Network, Disney, and Manley Toys Ltd.
Half of the toys were delivered the same day to the Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children, which provides home care for orphans.
Asian Tigers K. C. Dat has generously undertaken the collection and delivery of toys in AmCham’s toy drive for the second year in a row.
Susan Sy, AmCham’s CRC Vice-Chair, and Benjamin Condit, Chair of the YP Committee, have spearheaded this year’s toy drive.
