AmCham's New Book Released: Living in Hong Kong PDF Print E-mail
Media Release – February 24, 2008

The American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong has released its annual resource book: Living in Hong Kong, which is simultaneously published in website format.
Now in its 18th edition, Living in Hong Kong is updated every year by a dedicated research editor. It is the standard “settling in” guide for newcomers and a regular desk reference for current residents, geared to give the expatriate community access to the real world of the territory at street level.
The latest edition has amassed nearly 800 websites and lists of popular locations amongst Hong Kong's 10,000 restaurants and more than 47,000 shops.
People seeking a ‘greener’ life in Hong Kong will also find something there, with an expanded environment section that includes a list of consumer friendly companies and product outlets.
“The book gives expats who might not speak Cantonese or Mandarin better access to things that they might not otherwise know exist,” said Fred Armentrout, AmCham Communications Director and the book's chief editor, who has used it to find arts, music and sports activities and classes for his own children.
Not only does it provide information on all manner of needs, such as where to find residential housing, an international school or things to do with children, or guide to arts and sports facilities, but also covers many aspects truly unique to Hong Kong, which are often missed by foreigners because they are not widely covered in English media.
There is also a look at Hong Kong's living environment and an extensive guide to Western-oriented medicine and Western trained doctors accompanied by a very long section on traditional Chinese medicine and alternative therapies in the “Quality of Life” chapter that may be useful to both locals and expats.
“The most important message carried by Living in Hong Kong is the celebration of just how cosmopolitan is this exciting city,” said Armentrout, who has lived here over 30 years and edited 13 editions of the now classic book which was first published in 1973.
Living in Hong Kong has 23 chapters within 516 full color pages. Priced at $350 the book is available for purchase at leading booksellers, by mail, in person at AmCham’s reception desk, and on its website www.amcham.org.hk. To order directly, please contact Ms Hanna Chung on 2530 6934.
