Media Release - January 18, 2008
In the spirit of showcasing the work of local Hong Kong artists, the American Chamber of Commerce will present its third art exhibit next Thursday night, highlighting artist Celia Ko. The exhibition is called Faces and Places.
Celia Ko graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (drawing & painting). After participating in numerous group exhibitions and several mural projects in L.A. and Long Beach, Ko held her solo painting exhibitions “Paradise” (1995), “Detours”(1997), “The Essence” (2000), “objets d’amour”(2006) in Hong Kong and “Lost in the Woods” (2001) at Vermont, USA.
Ko excels at creating large public outdoor mural paintings, and has led numerous public and educational mural programs. She is also a visiting lecturer at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Art School, Hong Kong City University and a tutor at HKU-SPACE.
But her real forte is the painting of portraits.
“People and their faces fascinate me,” says Ko. “I observe their features, skin tones, movements, manners. The beauty of their individualities inspires me.
“Likeness is important, as it is a key to the soul. But portraiture is more than a representation of a ‘likeness’; it should convey more soulful and deeper qualities. In my paintings, my intention is to capture my subject’s charisma & presence.”
Along with her paintings, her art objects show, “Wearables,” exhibited overseas.
