Each day we learn more about the extraordinary extent of the devastation and loss of life from the recent earthquake in Sichuan Province. It is encouraging to see the rapid response by the Chinese authorities to effectively mobilize emergency equipment and other resources to assist the victims in the region. The Hong Kong SAR Government also reacted instantly with the Chief Executive announcing plans to donate HK$300 million to help the quake victims and deployed a volunteer team of experts from the Health and Fire Services Department to offer assistance there. But caring for the injured and homeless, as well as massive rebuilding of infrastructure, will take a long time. If you have not yet contributed to the earthquake relief and would like to help, AmCham recommends making contributions to any one of the agencies listed below – all of which have strong track records for assistance and for putting money to use quickly and efficiently when needed in such disasters.
