Friday, November 3, 2006 | Law Committee
 |
The Law Committee is pleased to present a breakfast meeting on the future of China's legal system with one of the pioneers in the field of Chinese law. Mr. Cohen will review and discuss the following: recent developments regarding legislation and international agreements, court and arbitration reforms, administration of criminal justice and human rights, and restrictions upon lawyers and so-called "barefoot lawyers."
Professor Cohen concentrates on business law relating to Asia and has long represented foreign companies in contract negotiations and dispute resolutions in China and East Asia. In September, he testified before the U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China as one of a distinguished group of witnesses who assessed human rights conditions and the development of the rule of law in China. Among other issues, Prof. Cohen discussed the role of law and legal institutions in promoting China's remarkable economic progress and the Chinese government's interference in their court system. Professor Cohen was formerly an advisor to the Government of Sichuan Province, China, and chairman of the American Arbitration Association's China Conciliation Committee. |
