With over 35 years of living and working in Hong Kong, Invest Hong Kong Director-General Mike Rowse is in a prime position to opine why Hong Kong has triumphed over countless obstacles and daily battles to hold the pole position in the race to be Asia's leading business platform.
Hong Kong remains in a strong position to best its regional competitors in the war for talent and domestic and foreign investment dollars, despite runs on the Hong Kong dollar, regional economic turbulence, SARS and other airborne contaminants, Olympian commercial and residential rents, sharpening competition from Singapore, Shenzhen and Shanghai and the looming opening of India.
During his conversation with Mark Clifford, executive director of the Asia Business Council, the ever-affable and voluble Mr. Rowse will tell us why Hong Kong remains the supreme platform on which to base a regional business. Mr. Rowse will also discuss the outlook for tourism and entertainment and the role of AsiaWorld-Expo as Hong Kong seeks to grow as a regional and indeed world magnet for inbound investment and economic vitality.
Mike Rowse came to Hong Kong in 1972, and since then has left only to extol it overseas. After immersing himself in Hong Kong life as an English tutor and a tabloid journalist, he joined the new Independent Commission Against Corruption in 1974. After serving in both the Operations and Corruption Prevention departments, he switched to the Government proper in 1980 as an administrative officer.
Mr. Rowse was Hong Kong's first Commissioner for Tourism and the first Director-General of Investment Promotion. In that capacity he established Invest Hong Kong as the government's investment promotion agency. |
