Eleven years after Hong Kong's reunification with the Mainland, there are dramatic changes underway in Hong Kong, China, and indeed Asia. The U.S. relationship with Asia is increasingly complex and important. In Hong Kong, the international presence remains strong and the economy continues to grow. The Chinese central government has laid out a timeline for Hong Kong universal suffrage, a stated goal of the majority of Hong Kong's people and all the political parties in the territory. After three years here, U.S. Consul General James B. Cunningham will examine future challenges and long-term prospects for Hong Kong from an American perspective. As America itself prepares for a Presidential election, CG Cunningham will discuss the U.S. vision of its relationship with Hong Kong in the context of the U.S. - China relationship.
Consul General Cunningham was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania and graduated magna cum laude from Syracuse University, with degrees in political science and psychology. He was previously U.S. Ambassador and Deputy U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations. He is married to Leslie Genier of Mineville, New York. They have two children.
