Wednesday, February 18, 2009 | Lunch & Learn Workshop
 |
For most parents, the pre-college planning process is a great source of anxiety and worry: what do my children want to study, what are the general guidelines for applications, what are some of the more rigid admissions processes, and more. This workshop gives parents of secondary students an overview of the pre-college preparation and admissions process in the United States. Mark Montgomery offers college advice in an informative format that will take some of the stress out of pre-college planning. With a bit of organization, a dose of skepticism, and a willingness to do a bit of research, all families can ensure a happy outcome.
Topics include:
* The tools: What do your children need to prepare?
* Admissions selectivity: Is it really that difficult?
* Elements of a great college fit
* College priorities: What do they want?
* How admissions decisions are made
* Admissions "hooks"
Once participants understand the real pressures that both students and colleges face, they will review the applications of fictitious students as members of an admissions committee. They will discuss qualifications, compare credentials, and make decisions on who gets in¡ -- and who does not. Mark will also give a general view of the college application process.
Who is this workshop for? Any parent with school-age children considering higher education in the United States. The workshop will address concerns of both US citizens and citizens of other countries. |
