Human rights issues such as alleged abuse of labor rights, ethnic tensions in Tibet and Xinjiang, widespread use of capital punishment, and controls over freedom of expression and association have always been an area of contention in US-China relations. How the Obama Administration addresses these issues will affect the overall relationship and impact how the countries deal with the economic crisis gripping the world.
During this luncheon event, John Kamm will identify areas of disagreement and examine the possible ways President Obama might deal with them. Questions he will address include:
* Will the human rights dialogue between the two countries continue? And if it will, how might it change?
* How will the Obama administration use the United Nations as a forum to address human rights issues?
* Will trade sanctions be considered to address alleged abuses of workers rights?
* How will China's Internet censorship and the transparency in the justice system be addressed?
Kamm is passing through Hong Kong on his way to Shanghai, Nanjing and Beijing for conversations with Chinese officials on human rights. After his visit to Hong Kong, Mr. Kamm will travel to Shanghai, Nanjing, Beijing and Europe for conversations with senior government officials on human rights.
