Convention centers draw huge visitor traffic to cities and now are major investment magnets in Asian cities who vie to host mega-events. The development of new integrated resorts in Macau and Singapore, which boast enormous exhibition and convention facilities, has focused attention on the MICE industry capacity and opportunity across the Asia-Pacific region. As the Canton Fair, the grandfather of regional trade fairs, goes from strength to strength, third-tier cities in China have built convention halls in hopes of drawing trade show organizers. Given this growth in this key market, how well is Hong Kong positioned to compete? Is Macau, bursting with building projects, an opportunity or threat? What, exactly, is in Hong Kong's future as a center for business events, particularly exhibitions and conventions?
Panelist Wolfram Diener heads the MICE division of The Venetian's US$2.1 billion project on Macau's Cotai Strip. Most recently he was GM of SNIEC, a Shanghai-based Sino-German joint venture thought to be the busiest venue in Asia-Pacific.
Peter Sutton is President and Chief Executive of CMP Asia. Throughout his career, Mr. Sutton has combined responsibilities for all types of B2B media events and publications, covering a wide variety of businesses and industries, in Europe, the USA and Asia.
Cliff Wallace heads Hong Kong's Convention and Exhibition Centre, now expanding to over 300,000 sqm of exhibition space, and also chairs the Hong Kong-Shanghai Venue Management (Zhengzhou) Ltd., in Henan Province. He is Executive Vice President and Incoming President of UFI, the global association of the exhibition industry.
Moderator Paul Woodward runs BSG, a consulting firm that supports business media, information and events across the Asia-Pacific region.
