Dean Brown and Dean Guthrie will provide an analysis of one of the most complex and important bilateral relationships in the 21st century. They will examine the regional and global implications of U.S.-China relations from a foreign policy, security, economic and business perspective. Dean Brown and Dean Guthrie will conclude with observations of the key opportunities and challenges in the evolving relationship between the two world powers. Michael E. Brown is the Dean of the Elliott School of International Affairs and Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at The George Washington University. He has held these positions since August 2005.
Before coming to GW, Dean Brown held senior positions at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, and the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. He was Co-Editor of International Security, the leading academic journal in the security studies field, for twelve years. He is the author of Flying Blind: The Politics of the U.S. Strategic Bomber Program, which won the Edgar Furniss National Security Book Award. He is the editor or co-editor of 22 books, including: Grave New World: Security Challenges in the 21st Century, Going Nuclear: Nuclear Proliferation and International Security in the 21st Century, and four books focused on Asian security issues. Dean Brown received his Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University. Doug Guthrie is Dean of the School of Business and Professor Management and International Business at The George Washington University. He has held these positions since 2010.
Prior to joining GW, Dean Guthrie served as Professor of Management at New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business. He also held a joint appointment as Professor of Sociology on NYU’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences and was Director of Executive Education at NYU-Stern. He has held visiting positions at Harvard Business School, INSEAD and the graduate schools of business at Stanford University, Columbia University and Emory University. He has authored, co-authored, and edited numerous books, articles, and reports on Chinese economic reform, leadership, and corporate social responsibility, including Dragon in a Three-Piece Suit: The Emergence of Capitalism in China and China and Globalization: The Economic, Political, and Social Transformation of China. Dean Guthrie holds an A.B. in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago. He received his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in organizational sociology from the University of California, Berkeley. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
