Dear Committee members, What will happen in the shipping industry in 2012 and how will the port industry in Asia be affected by the current market uncertainty and outlook for trade? The Transportation and Logistics Committee is pleased to welcome Tom Kim, Executive Director at Goldman Sachs for Regional Transportation Research as well as welcome back Jonathan Beard, who is GHK 's Global Head of the Group’s Ports and Logistics Consultancy. Mr. Kim will provide his views and forecast for 2012 on shipping lines' supply/demand issues and how this will affect rates and services as well as Mr. Beard will provide his views and forecast for the container terminal market. This session is designed to provide some interesting insights and forecasts for the New Year. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Mr. Thomas (Tom) Kim has 16 years of experience in the financial services industry. Mr. Kim is the head of Pan Asia transportation team at Goldman Sachs. He is responsible for overseeing a regional team covering shipping, airlines, railroad and infrastructure. Mr. Kim has worked in the US prior to relocating to HK in 2000. He received a Bachelors of Science from the Hotel School of Administration of Cornell University. He also holds a Masters of Business Administration and Masters of Accountancy from Northeastern University where he studied under sponsorship from legacy PriceWaterhouse. Dr. Jonathan Beard is an Executive Director of GHK Economic & Management Consultants and Global Head of the Group’s Ports and Logistics Consultancy Practice. He regularly advises investors, port / airport authorities, terminal operators and financial advisors on the development and financing of transport and logistics related infrastructure. Dr. Beard has completed independent market assessments on green-field container terminals in Vietnam, Argentina, North Africa and India. He was project director for the Port Klang Master Plan 2030, lead author for the Shanghai Port Strategic Plan and the Hong Kong Port Master Plan 2020 and update. He is currently developing a national blueprint for Malaysia’s cruise tourism sector and is consulting on new terminal developments in Southeast Asia and Mexico. Other recent assignments include advising the Competition Commission Singapore on the Block Exemption for liner shipping agreements and indentifying high-growth port investment opportunities for an international terminal operator. Dr. Beard has also worked extensively in the aviation sector and is currently advising Singapore on the development of its business aviation sector. He holds a BA, MA and PhD from Cambridge University, and is a Certified Management Consultant and former President of the Hong Kong Institute of Management Consultants.
