U.S.-China Relations: Challenges and Opportunities

The relationship between the United States and China - the world's largest developed country and the world's largest developing country - naturally draws the most attention among all bilateral relations. As a prominent American business leader involved in shaping U.S. policies affecting China relations, Sybase CEO and President John Chen will discuss the current landscape of the multi-faceted relationship, including trade issues, between these two nations. Mr. Chen will share his views on the potential impact on American enterprises doing business in China.

A native of Hong Kong, Mr. Chen joined Sybase 10 years ago, after serving as president of the Open Enterprise Computing Division of Siemens Nixdorf, and chair and CEO of Pyramid Technology Corp. Under his leadership, Sybase has become a highly profitable company that has grown from a leading enterprise-class database provider to the largest publicly traded software company specializing in data management, data integration and enterprise mobility.

Mr. Chen is actively involved in international relations, and has testified before Congress on U.S.-China trade relations. In December 2005, U.S. President George W. Bush appointed him to serve on the President's Export Council. In December 2006, he was appointed co-chair of the Secure Borders and Open Doors Advisory Committee. Mr. Chen also serves as a director on several boards including that of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and served as vice chair and board member for the Committee of 100.
