Breakfast and Learn: Translate to Relate - A Guide to Effective Business Communication in Different Languages

Martin Heimann, Managing Partner, Orange Translations

Languages and translations surround members of the international business community in many ways. Translating important documents and communications is becoming especially vital as we do more business with China and the rest of the world. However, most of us have stumbled over incomprehensible or even humorous translations from time to time or have heard stories of global companies whose translation blunders became the subject of jokes.

Join this 70-minute workshop, during which Mr. Martin Heimann, Managing Partner at Orange Translations, will address the following:
* Does my organization need translations: Why translate and what to translate?
* Human translations vs. machine/online translations
* What are computer aided-translation (CAT) and translation memory (TM) tools?
* What makes a good translator?
* Insource or outsource?
* How much do translations cost? What are they worth?
* What are the criteria for selecting a capable translation company?
* What can my organization do to ensure a smooth translation process and minimize costs?

The workshop will be based on the speaker’s real-life experience as a project manager in the translation industry as well as best practices and recommendations from the American Translators Association and other professional groups. The speaker will present many real-life examples and will take questions as they come up throughout the talk.

Martin Heimann is the managing partner at Orange Translations Ltd., a language services company with offices in North America, Europe and Asia. He holds a diploma in business economics from the Ludwigshafen Business School in Germany and a masters in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Before starting out in the language industry he worked with BASF in Germany, Belgium and Russia.
