Group Buying: Transforming Consumerism and Businesses

The group buying revolution has taken the world by storm and is now affecting businesses and consumers in Hong Kong on a new level.


What is this phenomenon called group buying? Already a hit in the US with sites such as Groupons, the deal-a-day tool combines power in numbers from the consumers with bargain hunting. For instance, a vendor agrees to offer an exclusive rate for a product or service, but only if its expected number of consumers confirms its interest. As representatives of one of the leading group buying sites in Hong Kong and one of its vendors, Mr. Danny Yeung and Ms. Christina Chang will discuss some of the issues surrounding this revolutionary consumer trend:

As the CEO of uBuyiBuy.com, Mr. Danny Yeung has set the strategies and visions for the company and introduced the culture of online group buying to the Asia Pacific region. Realizing that e-commerce was still at in its infancy stage when compared with the US and Europe, Mr. Yeung, along with his business partners, created, developed and managed the online group buying platform featuring appealing deals in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. Prior to being involved in uBuyiBuy.com, Mr. Yeung worked for Keynote Systems, managing Keynote’s Test Perspective service, as well as Barracuda Networks. Since its launch in Hong Kong in late June, uBuyiBuy.com has sold more than 80,000 vouchers, saving over 50,000 consumers more than HK$8,000,000. uBuyiBuy.com works with top-rated businesses, such as Starbucks, Haagen Dazs, Dining Concepts, caffè HABITŪ, UA, AMC, PizzaExpress, Outback, TONI&GUY Salons, BLT Steak, Ding Tai Fung and many more.


Ms. Christina Chang has more than 15 years of experience in marketing and public relations, especially in the entertainment and hospitality industry with renowned brands such as The Manhattan Group and the club dragon-i. She has expertise in turning new concepts to real practice and introducing new products, planning and launching marketing campaigns. Today as the brand Manager of TONI&GUY Hong Kong, she pays great efforts in maintaining the reputation as well as in pushing the standard of the brand.


Eric Pong is founder and CEO of Red Hare Limited, a wholesale distributor of consumer electronics, and a former Chairman of the Young Professionals Committee. In the recent years he has taken roles such as angel investor, adviser, or consultant in a number of web startups. While most of them have been unsuccessful, he holds onto the hope that one day a few will grow to become successful businesses. When not involved in business ventures, Eric likes to spend a significant amount of his time doing volunteer work and community service.

* An email confirmation will be sent to the registered email address two (2) working days prior to the event. Online bookings will generate an automated confirmation via e-mail.
* Membership is on an individual basis. Non-members can only attend at non-member price.
* All cancellations must be notified in writing at least two working days prior to the event, or six working days prior to the conference. No-shows will be charged.
* Faxed or mailed booking forms received without payment (check/cash) will be considered void, unless valid credit card details are given as guarantee. If payment is not received by 5pm the day after the event, the credit card on file will be charged automatically.
* When Typhoon 8 (or above) or Black Rainstorm Signal is hoisted, all events will be cancelled.
