Please join us at the AmCham Food & Beverage Committee Meeting on Wednesday, January 12 at 8am to welcome Dr. Christopher Hickey, FDA China Office Country Director and Ms. Irene Chan, Assistant Country Director, US Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Embassy Beijing who will give a talk on the Progress of U.S. Food Safety Legislation. Please note that this meeting will be held at American Consulate General, U.S. Agricultural Trade Office Hong Kong, 18/F St. John’s Building, 33 Garden Road, Central.

  • To provide an overview of FDA’s goals and functions in China.
  • To report on the latest development of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act.
  • To discuss new requirements in the legislation affecting importers and foreign facilities.
  • To answer questions on FDA food regulations and food import policies.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Since May 2008, Dr. Christopher J. Hickey has served as the Country Director for the People’s Republic of China for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He serves as overall lead for FDA’s efforts in China, and leads a staff team that will include personnel in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. From September 2004 until May 2008, Dr. Hickey served in the Office of Global Health within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). In that capacity, he negotiated UN treaties on a number of issues, including human rights and infectious disease. He also helped to negotiate Agreements between HHS and the Chinese Government on product safety. Before his time at HHS, Dr. Hickey worked for the Institute for Global Engagement, a Philadelphia-based non-government organization active in the area of human rights. Dr. Hickey earned his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Virginia in 2002. Dr. Hickey lives with his wife and daughter in Beijing.

Ms. Irene Chan
serves as Assistant Country Director for FDA’s China Office, and holds responsibility for policy analysis and capacity building activities related to food and animal feed, dietary supplements, and cosmetics. She previously served as Special Assistant to FDA’s Deputy Commissioner for Policy, where she was responsible for policy analysis and special projects related to guidance, regulation, and legislation development in all of FDA’s product areas, and was central in the drafting and publication of FDA’s Food Protection Plan in 2007. From 2005 to 2006, she was Assistant General Counsel of the Cosmetic Toiletry, and Fragrance Association, where she performed legal analysis on regulatory issues related to cosmetics and personal care drug products sold over-the-counter. From 2002 to 2005, Ms. Chan served as an attorney in the FDA Office of the Chief Counsel, where she provided legal advice in the areas of food safety, dietary supplements, health claims, cosmetics, and bioterrorism. Irene received her J.D. from Harvard Law School and received her M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health.

* Membership is on an individual basis. Non-members can only attend at non-member price.
* All cancellations must be notified in writing at least two working days prior to the event, or six working days prior to the conference. No-shows will be charged.
* Faxed or mailed booking forms received without payment (check/cash) will be considered void, unless valid credit card details are given as guarantee. If payment is not received by 5pm the day after the event, the credit card on file will be charged automatically.
* When Typhoon 8 (or above) or Black Rainstorm Signal is hoisted, all events will be cancelled.
