Lost&Found: Hong Kong
Like any modern metropolis, Hong Kong has a protean identity that extends into its physical manifestation. Glittering skyscrapers shade street vendors, solemn temples face bustling streets, and surrounding the pulsating global epicenter of Victoria Harbor lie scores of quiet villages that creak and moan against the wind. Moving through the land geographically is one way to witness this abundant variety; moving through it temporally is another. First time visitors will see what local residents can not, and vice versa, with neither being able to claim legitimacy over the other. Many perspectives - legitimate because they are genuine - expose the richness of Hong Kong. Lost&Found: Hong Kong is an exhibition, drawn from the book of the same name, of three such perspectives: a lifelong resident's attempt to counter the tendency to take for granted what one has seen every day, a prodigal son reconciling the new and the familiar, and a relative newcomer becoming acquainted with a place that she calls a "photographer's paradise." BIOS: Blair Dunton
After five years in Hong Kong, Blair's perspective on Hong Kong no longer lingers in the realm of the visitor. But still, she sees Hong Kong with fresh eyes, calling it a "photographer's paradise." From the slow, sacred smoke of burning incense to the raucous rhythms of laborers, the quotidian details of this protean city is so abundant and mesmerizing that Blair claims "a photographer need only point the camera and shoot." She teaches English at a local university.
Hank Leung
Born in Hong Kong but raised in Taiwan and Canada, Hank returned to his birthplace six years ago to pursue a career in intellectual property law. He has the rare advantage of a prodigal son - this city he calls home is simultaneously familiar and new, predictable and surprising, comfortable and exhilarating. Equipped with this perspective and a camera, he explores Hong Kong and its juxtapositions: "ultra modern and traditional, extreme wealth and poverty, vast green country parks and cage homes."
Kit Li Sui Pong
Kit is a student at the City University of Hong Kong and the only photographer in this exhibit who is a lifelong resident of Hong Kong. A true aesthete, he uses photography as a means of observing details that might elude other residents who, after a lifetime of exposure to the idiosyncratic quirks of their city, take them for granted. In a city that ticks relentlessly like a perpetual clock, Kit's camera is a magical device that stops time just long enough for him to consider and capture fleeting moments of beauty.
