Dr. Lam is a noted authority on China with more than 30 years' experience writing and researching about China and connections that reflect that. His views on China are often sought by global media, including CNN, BBC, ABC, Bloomberg, Voice of America, and other major publications and electronic media. He has worked in senior editorial positions in international media including Asiaweek newsmagazine, the South China Morning Post, and the Asia-Pacific headquarters of CNN.

Dr. Lam has been Professor of China and Global Studies at Akita International University, Japan, since early 2005. He is also an adjunct professor at Chinese University of Hong Kong (History Department); and a Senior Fellow at the Jamestown Foundation, a think tank in Washington D.C. specializing in Russia, the Near East and China.
