America's Approach to Hong Kong and Macau in the Context of U.S-China Relations

With the U.S-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue having met May 9-10, Consul General Young will review the current state of U.S.-China relations, and discuss U.S. engagement and future prospects for relations with Hong Kong and Macau, including Hong Kong’s upcoming series of elections and the growing U.S. engagement with Macau.


Ambassador Stephen M. Young assumed his responsibilities as Consul General of the United States of America in Hong Kong on March 11, 2010. As Consul General, he is responsible for the Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Regions.

Ambassador Young was born in Washington, D.C. and educated at Wesleyan University, where he received a B.A. (1973), and the University of Chicago, where he received an M.A. (1974) and a Ph.D. (1980) in history.

Ambassador Young joined the State Department in 1980. Most recently, he was a member of the faculty at National Defense University’s Industrial College of the Armed Forces, located at Fort McNair in Washington, DC. His most recent overseas assignment was as Director of the American Institute in Taiwan. Ambassador Young was U.S. Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic from 2003 to 2005. He also served in Beijing and Moscow. Within the State Department, he was the Director of the Office of Chinese and Mongolian Affairs; the Director of the Office of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh Affairs; and the Director of the Office of Caucasus and Central Asian Affairs. Ambassador Young speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese and Russian.

* An email confirmation will be sent to the registered email address two (2) working days prior to the event. Online bookings will generate an automated confirmation via e-mail.
* Membership is on an individual basis. Non-members can only attend at non-member price.
* All cancellations must be notified in writing at least two working days prior to the event, or six working days prior to the conference. No-shows will be charged.
* Faxed or mailed booking forms received without payment (check/cash) will be considered void, unless valid credit card details are given as guarantee. If payment is not received by 5pm the day after the event, the credit card on file will be charged automatically.
* When Typhoon 8 (or above) or Black Rainstorm Signal is hoisted, all events will be cancelled.
