International Schools

Based on test results and university admission rates, international schools in Hong Kong are some of the world’s best.

Local Schools

Hong Kong offers 12 years of free education in public schools for children between the ages of 6 and 18, irrespective of sex, ethnic origin, religious or ethical belief, family status and physical or mental ability.

English Schools Foundation (ESF)

The English Schools Foundation (ESF) was set up in 1967 to provide primary and secondary education on par with schools in the U.K. It is the largest provider of English-medium international education in Hong Kong and operates 22 schools.

ESF Admission Policy

Students applying for enrolment at an ESF school are placed on a waiting list.

Preschools & Kindergartens

What North Americans call a preschool or nursery school is usually called a kindergarten in Hong Kong. This market is highly competitive in Hong Kong, with the pre-primary sector consisting solely of privately run institutions.

Applying to International Schools

Due to high demand, waitlists for admission to international schools are usually long, and securing a place at your first choice isn’t something you should take for granted. This is especially the case for schools on Hong Kong Island.

Special Education Needs (SEN)

The shortage of places in local schools for children with special education needs has long been a concern in Hong Kong.
