New AmCham Chairman: Renewed engagement is needed for Hong Kong to re-emerge on the world stage

Hong Kong – January 19, 2023 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong (AmCham)’s new Chairman Geoffrey Siebengartner delivered his inaugural remarks on Tuesday highlighting the Chamber’s priorities for 2023 and the importance of engagement as a critical step in reviving Hong Kong’s post-pandemic economy and maintaining a healthy US-China relationship.

“As we embark on our engagement agenda for the year, we look forward to playing a role in restoring the networks and connections, and the dialogues and exchanges that play a crucial role in building mutual understanding and a less fragmented business environment,” said Siebengartner.

“To support the economy and attract businesses and talent, AmCham is of the view that the Hong Kong Government must communicate to foreign investors and the business community that Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy remains vibrant and intact, and will be preserved and promoted as the bedrock of an international business center,” added Siebengartner.

Under Siebengartner’s leadership, in 2023, AmCham will prioritize the following:

  • Reopening of Hong Kong in the post-Covid world
  • Refreshing AmCham’s advocacy and engagement agenda
  • Leveraging opportunities in the Greater Bay Area and the broader region
  • Continuing AmCham’s signature events and community gatherings
  • Expanding AmCham’s role as a responsible community stakeholder

Siebengartner is Managing Director and Head of Government Affairs and Corporate Responsibility in Asia Pacific for J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., based in Hong Kong. Prior to joining J.P. Morgan, he led the Government and Regulatory Affairs team in Asia Pacific for FedEx and served on the board of the Conference of Asia-Pacific Express Carriers. Prior to joining FedEx in 2017, Siebengartner was a U.S. diplomat for 14 years, with assignments in Beijing, Taipei, Shanghai, Washington, and Manila. He previously worked in e-commerce and investment banking.

This year’s inaugural was held in physical format, with over 80 Chamber members gathered at AmCham’s Community Hub in Central. A special acknowledgment to Intertrust Group for their support of this event.
